We amplify, make spaces for and build communities with South Asian Americans.
Red, White and Brown facilitates substantive conversations about culture and politics through the lens of race and identity — via journalism, social media and events. Subscribe to our newsletter.
So why Red, White and Brown?
There is a need for conversations where (1) South Asian American communities can own and share their own authentic stories at a time when (2) we are increasingly growing in population and prominence in public and private sectors across the United States and (3) much of the South Asian experience is funneled into a single story, which glosses over diverse stories in our communities.
So what makes us different?
South Asian Americans have been undercovered and underrepresented in a complex way in the news media. We recognize that is a gap, but there are others solving that problem.
The gap we are tackling is a place for people to process the news, understand how it impacts them and provide ideas about how they want to see themselves represented.
Our goal is to establish a genuine feedback loop with South Asian American communities. We are experimental, prototyping new methods of engaging communities through text messaging, theatrical plays and (virtual and in-person) events.
We believe in representing a diversity of South Asian American experiences — and that includes diversity of geography, community/caste, family and thought. We recognize South Asian communities, spaces and conversations can look different on the U.S. coasts compared to their presence in smaller or mid-sized cities.
At the end of the day, we’re journalists and believe in accuracy and fairness.
We like to collaborate.
